Plastic is considered porous because it's easy to scratch and then stuff can hide in the scratches even if it's well cleaned. So wash this toy with warm, soapy water; don't let your cat bat it around on the floor, and know that once it touches someone's fluid, it may hold onto some of it for life. There's a rubber ring below the threads the cap screws onto that keeps the battery compartment dry. Check it regularly to make sure the ring is intact. If it breaks or wears thin, it will no longer resist water. You can take it off the toy and go into a hardware store and tell them you need an O-ring in that size. They don't have to know what it's for! As with all battery operated toys, the motor in this one will function longer and better if you remove the batteries after each use.
